Colory Theory Assignment 7

This was our last assignment (and seemed like it was dumped on us as busy work).  The assignment was do a self portrait, realistic or abstract.  I went the abstract route.  I decided to use acrylic paint again just for gigs.  I used the blue Buddha man to represent my zen attitude and inside the structure I put all the things I love and represent a part of me.  Outside the structure I put all the outside influences that annoy me symbolized by stupid people, natural disasters, and smoky dragon.  I tried to use the light/dark symmetry like in the collage to draw the eye from the outside of teh piece to the inside.

Color Theory Assignment 6

By far my favorite piece of the class.  The assignment was to illustrate the seven deadly sins using color to represent each sin.  I chose Nintendo's Kirby as my representing icon and adapted him to each sin, but I also used hands on the inside of the circle and silhouettes on the outside to help emphasize each sin.  The color's came pretty naturally, most everyone in class used green for envy, red for wrath and pink for lust.  Most used a blue or grey for sloth and a royal purple for pride.  Trivia fact: Purple is the color of a dye extracted from a mollusk found on the shores of the city of Tyre in ancient Phoenicia that in classical antiquity became a symbol of royalty because only the very wealthy could afford it. Therefore, Tyrian purple was also called imperial purple.  I chose a sickly brown/yellow for gluttony to give it a jaundiced unhealthy look and orange for avarice, which i wont lie, was mostly due to the Green Lantern Corp comic which did the same.  I had a blast sketching and coloring this piece.  It is all done with micron pen for the outlines and prisma color pencil for the colors.

Color Theory Assignment 5

Mumford and Sons - The Cave.  Put it on right now.  Enjoy visual representation.  This assignment was to pick a song and to make a poster or CD cover.  This was my first attempt at the acrylic paint medium in...since I can remember.  It's much harder then it looks, but the mixing, overlapping, and never quite getting the same color again look adapt themselves into a nice looking piece.  Definitely enjoyed this one.  (I added water to white paint to achieve the misty look around the trees).

Color Theory Assignment 4

Pointillism!  Millions and millions of dots!  Well maybe not millions, but its a lot.  This assignment was for optical mixing, or using the eye to mix the small dots into new colors.  Yellow and red makes orange, blue and yellow makes green, complimentary colors make brown or grey.  Pointillism takes quite some time as you have to put in each and every single dot, but the finished products do look neat.  The goal is would be to have as little white in between the dots as possible (unless your attempting to make to make a lighter shade).  With limited time I couldn't fill out the picture as much as I would have liked but I did get a good bit of the optical mixing in.  Assignment complete!

Color Theory Assignment 3

This was a fantastic assignment involving collage and abstract interpretation.  I did a picture on the the pressure of advertising on the brain.  Using Rembrandt's The Mill as an influence I used darker colors on the outer edges of the piece and lighter colors towards the center, drawing the eye from outside to inside.  The zombie-esque people on the bottom represent the plethora of advertisements assaulting us while the purple shieldbearer prtecting the brain is the human consciousness that is the last stand between the brain and the horde.  The overall eye shape between the dark and light facets also signifies the eye as the means for advertisers to assault the brain.  I had a blast doing this assignment.

Color Theory Assignment 2

This assignment was a little more exciting to the eye.  We had to take a picture and adapt it to a complimentary color scheme (colors on opposite end of the color wheel).  Complimentary colors help the eye to move around the artwork.  They also make a piece seem more vibrant.  I took a picture of a castle in my friends aquarium with a snail on top.  The main complimentary colors are orange and blue, fairly close to Goethe's ratios, with accents of purple and yellow compliments to give the picture more depth.

Color Theory Assignment 1

Behold!  A blue owl!  I drew the owl blue because I've never seen a blue owl before.  For reals, the assignment was to take a picture and convert it into an analogous color scheme.  I went for the main color to be blue while dipping into blue's two sides on the color wheel for some green and purple accents.  Not a bad first assignment, maybe a little boring.
